help me chose a dress to wear!

Ok so I have this black tie event coming up on Friday - its a charity ball, and I'm SO excited to attend. We have hired a tux for V (he looks fantastic!) and I'm just trying to figure out what on earth I should wear.

I have narrowed the choice down to 2 dresses:

Terrible photo, but this is a gorgeous floor-length navy silk dress by Guava

Gah, not sure what's going on with my facial expression here! And this dress makes me look reeeeally short in this photo...

Or - a Wish mini-dress, which sits just above the knee

I am torn! Both dresses are gorgeous, but I am leaning towards the navy Guava dress because I think its much more "black tie" and I want to be dressed similarly to V, and he will be tuxing it up - but having said that, I think the Wish dress looks better on! Thoughts?

Muchly appreciate any tips, I am a bit lost!

  1. I actually like the Wish dress better, but for the event I think the first is the better choice. The colour will look lovely with your hair colour :)

  2. Completely agree with above ^^^ wish we could see both dresses on you! I think it would help to decide. But the first dress does seem better suited to the occasion. Hope you have a lovely night :)

  4. They are both lovely but I feel the first one is a bit more appropriate and very elegant:)

  5. I love the Wish dress! Looks amazing on you!

But I agree with the other girls, the navy dress is probably more suited to the event.

Have fun and be sure to post pics! ;)

  6. I also like the Wish dress better but I think the first one is probably more appropriate, purely due to the length... having said that, if you put your hair up in some sort of up-do perhaps and paired with a nice clutch and shoes, the Wish one could definitely work... If you are trying to "match", how will the navy dress work against the black tux?

  7. I like the first one, it's simple and elegant. The second one seems more you though (and by that I mean cute and fun!)

  8. The first one, but with some wicked accessorising - a cuff or something equally attention seeking!

  9. You guys are the BEST, thankyou so much for all the feedback! :)

If I go with the navy, I would wear it glammed up, with hair in a top-knot and red lipstick, and some awesome art deco-style sapphire and diamond earrings borrowed from my Mum (maybe with the matching necklace too).

I do adore the Wish dress so much - I actually have a cocktail event the following Friday for work, so it will get a wearing then if not this week!

  10. So I've totally been reading your blog for the last 6 months at least. . It's completely charming, sweet and filled with positivity & pretty pictures. Your posts are like little weekly pick-me-ups that always brighten my mood. While I am too lazy to commit to blogging myself, it has inspired me to be more creative & appreciate the aesthetic moments in daily life & to spread more joy and love. So... Thanks!

Plus, I think it's a general nod in the direction of the Guava evening gown (a great excuse to buy a statement piece of jewelery), despite the fact that the Wish dress is uber-cute & perfect for a summer cocktail party (yay summer!). You'll just have to create your own occasion to christen that great little number! I hope you both have a totally wonderful night.

  11. I think the first dress for this event - you're right, you can glam it up Audrey Hepburn styles. You'll be a knock-out, as per usual. Lovely! Have a great night!

  13. I agree with the general consensus. I like the Wish dress better, but the first is more appropriate for Black Tie. Esp with V wearing a tux. You'll look gorgeous in both though! x

  14. I love the second dress.

  15. Love both dresses but I like the long Guava dress best for black tie. The Wish dress looks versatile enough that you'd get a lot of wear out of it over summer, so I'd go with the first one :)

So jealous, I keep bugging Mr Skek to take me to a ball princess-style!

  16. So difficult! Love the wish dress but the navy is more black tie.. love how you'll be styling it, sounds absolutely divine, so lucky to have a mum with such gorgeous gems :)

  17. The first dress is more appropriate for the black tie event. You could glam it up with lotsa pearls!

  18. I say the first dress. Occasions that are floor length gown appropriate don't come around all the time so i say be as elegant as possible, you'll be able to get plenty of wear out of the Wish dress x
