my, oh miyazaki...

I have long been a fan of the adorable movies produced by Hayo Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli. I love that all of their cartoons are still entirely hand-drawn! I love the quirky and cute characters, the unique plotlines, and the mythology that underpins each film.
And I am not ashamed to admit that I own about half a dozen Miyazaki films on DVD, and that they are on high rotation in our household (V is also a fan).

The very first Miyazaki film I ever saw was the impeccable Spirited Away - V and I went to the local uni movies on a date and we both fell utterly in love with this movie. I adore the No Face ghost (pictured above) - "ah ah ah" LOL

Kiki's Delivery Service is such a sweet movie...

Laputa: Castle in the Sky is an absolutely magical film, the first film ever released by Studio Ghibli. Again, V and I saw this movie on a date together...

And my all-time favourite Miyazaki film... My Neighbour Totoro! I cannot possibly describe how utterly adorable this movie is - the cat bus, the weeny forest creatures, I just melt! I desperately want a Totoro of my very own to hug.

  1. If you ever go to Japan, make sure you go to the Studio Ghibli museum - it's absolutely incredible. They have a massive catbus that kids can climb on and a robot in the garden! Nick and I went nuts on the souvenirs and present buying - luckily our friends are into Miyazaki as well.

  3. I second Amy's comment - it was the most wonderful experience! They have rooms just full to the brim of Miyazaki's drawings, an enormous Totoro (who is also my absolute favourite) and the building itself is so fantastic!

I also rec. buying a Totoro stuffed toy, my husband and I both love anything Studio Ghibli, and Totoro is currently taking pride of place on one of our dressers!

  6. In Perth, there is a shop called Morning Glory that sells Totoro stuffed toys. Seems Sydney has Morning Glory too and you might just be able to get yourself a Totoro!

  7. Funny you posted about this I changed my facebook display picture to totoro the other day and watched it recently. I have been a fan of spirited away since a few years ago and have it on dvd. They are the most amazing films and they are such uplifting films!

My favourite part of Totoro is when she is like 'May is crabby' and draws a picture of her as a crab!

Oh and the dust bunnys or whatever they are called. Adorable.

Still need to see Laputa and Kikis!

  11. I know you wrote this ages ago, but I've only just come across your blog, and I have to say, I love this post! I'm a huge Miyazaki fan (and an English High School teacher, so I teach a film study unit on Howl's Moving Castle to my year 8 students each year because I love it so much!) :-)
