not a minimalist...

I have always longed to embrace minimalism in my living space - I love poring over Vogue living, admiring the gorgeously minimalist, perfectly right-angled interiors. But somehow I can never make myself "fit" into that style - I love having pretty things on display, I like my space to feel personalised and comfortable, to have it reflect my character (very, very girly!)

There is obviously a fine line between clutter and nicely decorated - I abhor clutter in every form (watching "Hoarders" makes me squirm), but I think its possible to display your favourite keepsakes, books and decorative items without overstepping that line. Or maybe I've crossed over, I'm not sure! You be the judge...

Serious cosmetics overload - the dressing table in the spare room (aka my dressing room) - I have a fairly limited makeup collection so I imagine there are far more impressive tables than mine out there!

My bedside table - replete with books, hand creams, candle, photo of V and I, and the ubiquitous "girly" crystal lamp

Our coffee table currently boasts several Glasshouse candles, body cremes, stacked display books, and an Aynsley china dish

Do you embrace minimalism? Or is your house more like mine?

  1. I don't know WHAT our space is hahaaha

    No idea

I draw "inspiration" from Selby though hahahaaa

The more I think about it the more I think our house has no style and it's daggy hahahaahaha :/ :/ :/

  2. I am a real minimalist, and that is my character - I don't agree with your implication that being a minimalist, not liking a lot of clutter on surfaces (the thought of knick knacks without a function makes me squirm) means you're not an individual.

  3. Mez - LOL our house definitely does not fall within any given style, its just very non-minimal! :D

Anon - apologies, I most definitely did not intend to imply that those who chose a minimalist decorating style are not individuals, I worded that poorly and will rectify now. I admire minimalist interiors, I think they are lovely, but no matter how hard I try, its just not me. My house would probably make you very uncomfortable! :D

  5. Thanks Cate - I didn't mean to offend, and I didn't take offence, I was probably reacting to the amount of people who tell me that a minimalist interior has "no personality", which I certainly don't think is true of my house!

  6. I could never ever embrace minimalism. I love my pretties! I think I inherited it from Mum. I just love knick knacks and little treasures. I like to be surrounded with beautiful things and happy memories :)

I do like organised minimalism in the fridge and pantry though, does that count? :P

  7. I CRAVE minimalism, but I have too much random stuff!!! I need a whole weekend just to go through my wardrobe - its basically one of those ones you see in movies that you open and an avalanche of stuff falls out!!! haha. Eek :| Ok wow that sounds worse than it is. Im hoping when I move out of my parents house I can start fresh and channel minimalism. Ahhhh.

  8. I love pretty things on display. I don’t have a dresser but I have shelves in the bathroom and a little nook in my wardrobe. I’m a minimalist throughout the rest of the house though.

  9. Years ago my Mum came up with the term "maximalist" and I think that sums my style up. I'm like you, I love having pretty things on display, interesting book cases with random additions etc.

However, I must admit I've been so busy recently maximialism is fast becoming just mess. Must find time to sort that out.

  10. i think im somewhere in between minimalist and having pretty things everywhere.

i find clear spaces much less stressful and find im happiest when i have less out and about. i like to have only the most special and pretty looking things.

then life happens and i have things everywhere... and then the decluttering process begins again! its a vicious cycle. its harder to maintain it in a small living space, so im hoping when i move out it will be easier to manage :)

  11. Your bedside table is so neat, mine is all dusty with jewellery and books on top. I should really clean more often but I always find better things to do lol

  12. While I attempt the minimalist look, I always end up adding something to decorate or pretty up a space! Mini vases of flowers are my weakness!
